This blog...

...is not meant to be a blog, but a gallery of mosses and liverworts. The pictures are meant to be helpful for species identification both in the field and under the microscope.

Most photos (including all micro-photos) result from my work within the project  Biomonitoring with forest springs at the University of Bayreuth, Department of Biogeography, in 2006/07. Bryophytes in forest springs of the two lower mountain regions Fichtelgebirge and Frankenwald (Bavaria, Southern Germany) were studied. All these photos are not specifically labeled.

Further pictures I took in a raised bog in south Sweden in 2008, on the arctic island Jan Mayen in 2010 (see Re-Sample project at the University of Bergen, Department of Biology , EECRG), as well as around Bergen (Hordaland, Norway) and in northern Norway (Troms).

Several photos were taken in different habitats around Pitlochry/Enochdhu (Scotland) during a field course of the FSC/BBS at the Kindrogan Field Center in 2010 (many thanks to the tutor Dr. Martha Newton for a fantastic course!).

The taxonomy follows Frahm & Frey's Moosflora (2004) for bryophytes in the forest springs in Germany, and Smith 2004 (The moss flora of Britain) and Damsholt 2002 (Illustrated flora of Nordic liverworts and hornworts) for all the others.

Please feel free to contact me if any queries, suggestions, or if you are interested in pictures of higher resolution.
